Last week we told you about shows with French themes at Adelaide Fringe 2022, this week we’re telling you about French links in Adelaide Fringe performers.
FRENCH TRAINED ADELAIDE FRINGE PERFORMERS
FRENCH LINK: Damien Warren-Smith, aka Garry Starr, retrained as a clown at École Philippe Gaulier in Paris
An overzealous idiot attempts to perform all of Greek Mythology in less than 60 minutes in order to save his Hellenic homeland from economic ruin.
Never before has Medusa been looser, Achilles more sillies, or Uranus so heinous.
FRENCH LINK: Nicolas Angelosanto (see Plastica Fantastica below) is a professionally trained idiot under the clown stylings of Philippe Gaulier in France.
Join Sphenn, a man, and his best friend Lucy, a beautiful 1950’s red bicycle, on a sublime comedy journey into a world of absurdity and daily shenanigans as they tackle their problems with a pazaz and style only capable from the most majestic of idiots.
FRENCH LINK: Sam Dugmore studied at the Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School in Paris. This is also where he met the other members of The Latebloomers, an international company of performers from the UK, Sweden, and Australia.
MANBO is one of the greatest action heroes of all time. He must un-earth his ruthless man skills to confront his greatest nemesis…himself. A deadly mission filled with calamity, 80’s workout montage, explosions, evil Russians, suppressed raw emotion, and a dog called Fluffy.
One-man vs himself.
FRENCH LINK: Show performer Jennifer and show director Nicolas (see Lucy and Me above) started work on the show when studying with Philippe Gaulier at his school in France.

ADELAIDE FRINGE PERFORMERS WHO SPENT TIME IN FRANCE
Kym Purling & Co. in Music on the Menu
FRENCH LINK: Kym Purling is based between Paris and New York
A dinner and a show experience at Luigi Delicatessen of Kym Purling, one of Australia’s biggest musical exports. Best known for his work as a jazz pianist, a conductor for Broadway shows and musical director and pianist for vocal legends such as Engelbert Humperdinck and Natalie Cole, he returns to Australia after 24 years performing across 144 countries.
These will be the first Adelaide Fringe shows for the New York and Paris based entertainer as well as the first time he’s sung on stage in Australia.
FRENCH LINK: Shakti is French speaking and has performed Classique Nu at Avignon Festival
Classique Nu is dance in its purest form.
The eternal classical western music that never ages with time and the beauty and vulnerability of the human body and soul are portrayed in this piece.
Shakti dances in the nude with an interpretation full of serenity, emotion and beauty to the classical music. Her sculpturesque postures are reminiscent of the Hindu temples and imagine a goddess descending from the heavens.
Biddy O’Loughlin: Funny girl, sad songs
FRENCH LINK: Biddy O’Loughlin lived in a castle in France
Biddy O’Loughlin weaves her story through dark, dry stand up and sweet, sad songs.
She’s lived in a castle in France and the gutters of LA. From busking on streets all over the world to giving birth in her hometown, there is a lot to talk and sing about.
FRENCH LINK: Brendan O’Donnell and Peri Strathearn were stuck in a tiny French village in 2002
Brendan O’Donnell and Peri Strathearn, from the band The Ides, reunite for their first gig in seven years. Expect original songs from their old band, described as “sitcom-theme piano pop”; tracks they listened to on a Sony Discman while stuck in a tiny French village in 2002; and some recreational reminiscing.
