Launched in 1982 in France, la Fête de la Musique, is a free celebration of music held on June 21st. It is now held on the same day in more than 800 cities in 120 countries. Australia has joined in with its own version called Make Music Australia.

The Alliance is celebrating La Fête de la Musique on Sunday 24 June from 3 to 10pm. It features a local and eclectic line-up: Lowdax (hip-hop), The Limbs (rock), Childlike Empress (rock), DJ BabBooBae (DJ set), DJ Pex (DJ set) and Bari (DJ set). Free before 6pm, $5 after.

In addition, Miik Green, an artist who works with plastic will present his exhibit Micro/Cosmos, which will be projected behind the DJs.

The Caribbean Steelband known as CaribVic for short, plays on 23 recycled oil drums transformed into chromatically pitched percussion instruments originating from Trinidad and Tobago in the West Indies. Since their beginnings in the 1930s, they have been tightly tied to community, and inclusive of the socially disadvantaged. The CaribVic steelband’s repertoire covers Calypso, Latin-style and Reggae as well as arrangements of more popular Western songs.
