Which film won the César? The 45th ceremony of France’s version of the Academy Awards was held last night in France. Many films that are part of the AFFFF 2020 film program have been awarded or were nominated for Césars. We tell you which ones were nominated and which ones won which prizes. The AFFFF is on in March and April across Australia.
Two AFFFF films won three Césars each, notably Ladj Ly’s « Les Misérables » and Nicolas Bedos’ « La Belle Epoque » .
BEST FILM
Ladj Ly’s « Les Misérables » won the prize for Best Film at the 45th Césars.
The other AFFFF 2020 films which were nominated for this prize are:

- “The Extraordinary” (« Hors normes ») from François Ozon (opening night film at the AFFFF)

The César for Best Actress was won by Anaïs Demoustier for her role in “Alice and the Mayor” (« Alice et le Maire »). It’s her first César.

The César for Best Actor was won by Roschdy Zem for his role in “Oh, mercy” (« Roubaix, une lumière »).

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
The AFFFF 2020 films nominated for the César of Best Supporting Actor was Benjamin Lavernhe for the role of Felix in “Love at second sight” (« Mon inconnue »)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Fanny Ardant won the César of Best Supporting Actress for the role of Marianne in « La Belle Epoque ».

BEST ADAPTATION
The AFFFF 2020 films nominated for the César for Best Adaptation are:
- “Oh Mercy” (« Roubaix, une lumière ») adapted from the documentary « Roubaix, commissariat central» by Mosco Boucault for which Arnaud Desplechin and Léa Mysius were nominated.
- “Only the animals” (« Seules les bêtes ») for which Dominik Moll and Gilles Marchand were nominated. It’s an adaption of Colin Niel’s novel of the same title.
AUDIENCE AWARD
The Audience César Award was given to Ladj Ly’s « Les Misérables » . It’s the first time that the prize wasn’t given to a comedy! The category has only existed since 2018.

“The Swallows of Kabul” (« Les Hirondelles de Kaboul ») from Zabou Breitman and Eléa Gobbé-Mévellec is the only AFFFF 20202 film nominated for this César category.
BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
The César for Best Production Design was awarded to Stéphane Rozenbaum for « La Belle Epoque ».
