Bastille Day 2020: where to celebrate around Australia

Next Tuesday 14th July will be Bastille Day 2020. A day to celebrate all things French.

Below, we let you know about ways to celebrate with French cuisine. While restaurants in some cities will be hosting their usual dinners, others such as Melbourne will be doing takeaway only.

On Bastille Day 2020, the Alliance Française French Film Festival will also return to screens in Adelaide, Brisbane, Byron Bay, Canberra, Hobart, Perth, Sydney – it was due to also return to Melbourne but with the strict lockdown measures resuming tonight, it won’t be returning at this stage.

Bastille Day 2020


You can find French foods at a number of stalls at the Adelaide Central Market. To name just a few:

  • Les Deux Coqs – For traditional French rillettes, terrines, tapenades, charcuterie, patisserie and viennoiserie. Bastille Day specials include the launch of two new products, limited edition VIP (Very Important Pate Croûte) and a French Picnic Bag.

  • The Smelly Cheese Shop – For the smelliest of French and Australian cheeses, French wine, ready-to-eat Raclette and Croque Monsieur (from 10am Thurs, Fri, Sat, Tues)
  • Atlas Continental – French themed menu including escargot pizza!
  • Barossa Fine Foods – French saucisson
  • Corner Deli – French Camembert & brie
  • Dough – For house-made patisserie, croissants and baguettes
  • Market Bread Bar – For French style crepes with all the fillings! The crepe pop-up will be located at the Gouger dining area on Friday 10, Saturday 11 and Tuesday 14 July
  • Mushroom Man’s Mushroom Shop – Add a shaving of truffle to your French cooking.

Due to COVID-19 the Adelaide Central Market’s full Bastille Day program has been suspended this year, however they still invite everyone to enjoy the live music program over three days:

Hey Jupiter

Apart from their usual Bastille Day dinner for which limited tables are left for a la carte dinner bookings, Hey Jupiter remains open throughout the day and night for French food and French Booze! Can Can dancers at 8.30pm!

La Buvette

Now that La Buvette is open during the day right through to the evening you can celebrate Bastille Day all day long there. For lunch there will be the menu a la carte and in the evening, La Buvette will return to a bar a vins with a tapas menu and DJ from 7pm.

Les Bistronomes

Les Bistronomes will be offering their French classics in the form of a 3 course ($80pp), 4 course ($90pp) or 7 course menu ($100pp) for lunch and dinner. 

You can see the 3 and 4 course menus here but not the 7 course, which is the chef’s surprise selection.

These menus will also be available for lunch and dinner. The dinner service will also be accompanied by live accordion music.

  • At this stage, the 6:00pm sitting has already fully booked, but they still have a few spaces for the 8:30pm sitting.

As of 11:59pm 8 July 2020, Melbourne will return to Stage 3 lockdowns meaning that restaurants are only allowed to be open for takeaway. Therefore the only way to celebrate Bastille Day 2020 with French restaurant food in Melbourne is to order a takeaway and support these small businesses. Bon appetit!


Bistro Gitan &  L’Hotel Gitan

Bistro Gitan & L’Hotel Gitan are doing hampers featuring classic French dishes. The 5 course hamper will be $95 for a couples hamper and $160 for a family hamper.

Bon Ap had a wonderful 5 days of revolution planned across Friday 10th, Saturday 11th, Sunday 12th, Monday 13th, Tuesday 14th. Given Melbourne’s return to lockdown these plans will sadly not go ahead.

Four Frogs Crêperies

In honour of Bastille Day 2020, Four Frogs Crêperies is bringing back one of its favourite specials: the truffle galette!


Bastille Day is a very exciting day of the year for Four Frogs, which is why they wanted to celebrate with a quintessentially French galette. The truffle galette has become a tradition at Four Frogs, and their customers wait for it every July. It’s a highlight of their year, and they love to share it with you!


To make this decadent savoury dish, Four Frogs fills one of its fresh galettes with freshly grated local black truffle, prosciutto, Swiss cheese & an egg. As always, they use their home-milled buckwheat flour to make their galettes, which is packed with flavour and nutrients.

Le Coq Healthy Rotisserie

Le Coq has created a singular wine matching menu for this special occasion. 

The menu is going to be available from 10th to 14th of July and costs $75 food only or $150 with matching wines.

For Bastille Day 2020, Loluk will be open for lunch and dinner on the 14th of July, with a lovely 4 course French set menu.

Merivale: Ash Street Cellar, Felix and Little Felix

Merivale will have celebrate Bastille Day 2020 with can-can dancers in the laneway, lunch and dinner specials at Ash Street Cellar and Felix and Möet & Chandon offers all day long – they’re upsizing every bottle to a magnum and every three glasses to a bottle.
