Belgian National Day 2020: how to celebrate

Reading Time: 7 minutes

Next Tuesday 21st July is Belgian National Day 2020 so a day to celebrate all things Belgian: drink some Belgian beer, eat moules frites and indulge in some Belgian chocolate or Belgian waffles. We tell you where to find them. With COVID-19 there are fewer events around Australia than usual, but you can find details of the events below. Happy Belgian National Day!

Belgian National Day 2020

Why is Belgian National Day celebrated on 21st July?

In 1830, the southern provinces of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands rebelled against Dutch rule, forcing the Dutch out of the region and securing Belgium’s independence.

Indpendence was approved by the European powers at the London Conference of 1830-31.

On 21 July 1831, the temporary regent Erasme Louis Surlet de Chokier officially relinquished his position and Leopold of Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha, a German nobleman, was crowned the first King of Belgium.

So all that to say that Belgian National Day commemorates the formal establishment of the independent kingdom and the crowning of Leopold I.
