FRENCH LINK: Damien Warren-Smith, aka Garry Starr, retrained as a clown at École Philippe Gaulier in Paris

An overzealous idiot attempts to perform all of Greek Mythology in less than 60 minutes in order to save his Hellenic homeland from economic ruin.

Never before has Medusa been looser, Achilles more sillies, or Uranus so heinous.

 

Lucy and Me - Adelaide Fringe performersLucy and Me

FRENCH LINK: Nicolas Angelosanto (see Plastica Fantastica below) is a professionally trained idiot under the clown stylings of Philippe Gaulier in France.

Join Sphenn, a man, and his best friend Lucy, a beautiful 1950’s red bicycle, on a sublime comedy journey into a world of absurdity and daily shenanigans as they tackle their problems with a pazaz and style only capable from the most majestic of idiots.

FRENCH LINK: Sam Dugmore studied at the Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School in Paris. This is also where he met the other members of The Latebloomers, an international company of performers from the UK, Sweden, and Australia.

MANBO is one of the greatest action heroes of all time. He must un-earth his ruthless man skills to confront his greatest nemesis…himself. A deadly mission filled with calamity, 80’s workout montage, explosions, evil Russians, suppressed raw emotion, and a dog called Fluffy.

One-man vs himself.

 

Plastica FantasticaPlastica Fantastica

FRENCH LINK: Show performer Jennifer and show director Nicolas (see Lucy and Me above) started work on the show when studying with Philippe Gaulier at his school in France.

A one-woman comedy show about a woman who is addicted to plastic but falls to pieces when she discovers she’s allergic to it!

 

ADELAIDE FRINGE PERFORMERS WHO SPENT TIME IN FRANCE

FRENCH LINK: Kym Purling is based between Paris and New York

A dinner and a show experience at Luigi Delicatessen of Kym Purling, one of Australia’s biggest musical exports. Best known for his work as a jazz pianist, a conductor for Broadway shows and musical director and pianist for vocal legends such as Engelbert Humperdinck and Natalie Cole, he returns to Australia after 24 years performing across 144 countries.

 

These will be the first Adelaide Fringe shows for the New York and Paris based entertainer as well as the first time he’s sung on stage in Australia.

FRENCH LINK: Shakti is French speaking and has performed Classique Nu at Avignon Festival

Classique Nu is dance in its purest form.

The eternal classical western music that never ages with time and the beauty and vulnerability of the human body and soul are portrayed in this piece.

Shakti dances in the nude with an interpretation full of serenity, emotion and beauty to the classical music. Her sculpturesque postures are reminiscent of the Hindu temples and imagine a goddess descending from the heavens.

FRENCH LINK: Biddy O’Loughlin lived in a castle in France

Biddy O’Loughlin weaves her story through dark, dry stand up and sweet, sad songs.

She’s lived in a castle in France and the gutters of LA. From busking on streets all over the world to giving birth in her hometown, there is a lot to talk and sing about.

 

Just like old times

FRENCH LINK: Brendan O’Donnell and Peri Strathearn were stuck in a tiny French village in 2002

Brendan O’Donnell and Peri Strathearn, from the band The Ides, reunite for their first gig in seven years. Expect original songs from their old band, described as “sitcom-theme piano pop”; tracks they listened to on a Sony Discman while stuck in a tiny French village in 2002; and some recreational reminiscing.

Adelaide Fringe 2022 sees a return to international performers but it is still very much the local acts who are putting on shows with French links. This year there is a heavy focus on music and cabaret with some theatre and comedy in the mix as well. Read on to find out about the shows with French themes.

CABARET & MUSIC AT ADELAIDE FRINGE 2022

 

A night in ParisAdelaide Fringe 2022 - Louise Blackwell

Adelaide Fringe favourite, Louise Blackwell and the French Set transport you to Paris with an afternoon of French chanson interspersed with tales of Louise’s time in Paris.

With a four-piece all-star band featuring Mark Ferguson on piano, Julian Ferraretto on violin, John Aué on double bass and Joshua Baldwin on drums, Louise Blackwell and the French Set perform songs by the great artists of French popular music including Edith Piaf, Léo Ferré, Georges Brassens, Barbara, Charles Trenet, Jacques Brel and Serge Gainsbourg. on this evening of French chanson.

Baby et Lulu

Baby et Lulu finally return to Trinity Sessions on their Album Trois tour. Expect a celebration of love, life and passion… with a sultry, sometimes outrageous French accent from this faux-French pair and their formidable band.

Adelaide Fringe 2022 - DisenchantedDisenchanted: A cabaret of twisted fairy tales

Why was the Wolf in Grandma’s bed? Did Sleeping Beauty have an opinion on consent? Were the ugly sisters’ feet really that big? And what does a goose have to do with the French revolution? Join vivacious Madame d’Aulnoy in her 17th century Paris salon, to hear the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the twisted truth about fairy tales.

 

Jacques and Madeleine

Adelaide Fringe 2022 will see the final instalment in the emotional love journey of Jacques and Madeleine as told thorough songs sung by Les Flâneurs Volants. Expect “more French, Quebecois and Cajun songs than you can point a baguette at.

Marvellous Music at Mary Mags

The first of a set of three concerts of choral music at Mary Magdalene’s church in Adelaide is entitled “Songs of Longing and Belonging”. In this 27 February performance, you can expect to hear choral gems from mediaeval England, renaissance France and right through to contemporary outback Australia.

Enter Blanc de Blanc’s glitzy, glamorous & extravagant world of vintage French flair, risqué humour, spectacular aerials, sparkling comedy and big dance numbers.

Rouge is circus for grown-ups. Michaela Burger, who you may have seen in her Helpmann Award winning Exposing Edith show about Edith Piaf, sings in French and in English in operatic cabaret style completing this line-up of acrobatics and tongue in cheek burlesque.

 

COMEDY/INTERACTIVE 

 

Talk Dirty, Stay Classy

A night of laughter as you learn an f*-load of your favourite swear words in French. Shows are loud, rude, and hilariously fun.

THEATRE AT ADELAIDE FRINGE 2022

Of AuburnAdelaide Fringe 2022

Of Auburn written by Steven Oppes of Les Flâneurs Volants, weaves together the life and poetry of CJ Dennis.  With the narration of WW1 nurse Madge Yeatman, the performance stirs emotions through theatre, poetry, personal testimony, live music and AV technology to tell the stories of Dennis and the women of World War I.

Silence!

Originally slated to be part of the Adelaide Fringe program, French troupe Les Commandos Percus will now bring their unique percussion, fireworks and pyrotechnics masterpiece to Australia in October.
