Reading Time: 3 minutes

It’s that time of year when all of the musical and theatrical companies are releasing their programs for next year. It’s also the moment where we realise that we would like to have a lot more money to be able to go to everything!

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra program has been released. Below, you will find concerts by French or francophone composers.

Ravel’s Mother Goose – 8 April

Ravel’s Ma Mère l’Oye (Mother Goose) will be performed in concert by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Ravel’s pieces were originally for the piano but he transformed them into orchestral versions.

Tickets for this concert are $29 for adults and are $25 for Concession card holders.

Ludovic Morlot – A night at sea – 16 and 17 May

Ludovic Morlot leads the orchestra in a series of works with water as theme. Among the works that will be played at the concert are La source d’un regard by Marc-André Dalbavie and Debussy’s La Mer.

Tickets cost $59 to $149 for adults and there are also reduced price tickets for concession card holders.

This concert will also be played in Geelong on 17 May.

Romantic and Rhapsodic – 2 June

This concert features works by Dean, Bruch and Loeffler. While none of them is French, Loeffler’s music was strongly influenced by French aesthetic. His two rhapsodies explore the feelings brought about by the opulence of French symbolism and leaning towards the sensuality of impressionism.

Adult tickets cost $62 and $56 for concession card holders.

Meet the Orchestra: Carnival of Dangerous Creatures – 13 June

This concert is part of the program for MSO Education Week. Musicians from the MSO will lead you on a sonar safari as they perform Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saëns and Dangerous Creatures by Hindson.

Tickets cost $17 and tickets who bring their students are entitled to a free ticket per group of 10 or more students.

The Rite of Spring –18 and 20 July

Even if Stravinsky isn’t French, his work The Rite of Spring is truly linked to France because it was in Paris, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées that on 29 May 1913, the Ballets Russes were making their debut of their work The Rite of Spring, which lead a now famous riot.

In this concert, you will hear The Rite of Spring as well as Perséphone, both by Stravinsky.

Tickets cost $59 to $149 and there are reduced tickets for concession card holders.

The Rite of Spring and Firebird – 19 July (Geelong)

Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite will be played along with Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and The Rite of Spring in this concert. You can also listen to Mother Goose in the concert of the same name on 8 April, as mentioned above.

Tickets cost between $53 and $102 for adults and there are reduced priced tickets for concession card holders.
