La Semaine du Goût comes to Australia this week

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Held in France since 1990, the Semaine du Goût (week of taste) is an annual week-long event of food events aimed for the general public. In France, there are also events specifically targeted at audiences from kindergarten through to higher education. In 2022, for the first time, the City of Unley in Adelaide is bringing la Semaine du Goût to Australia with two events.

In France, la Semaine du Goût was held last week. Restaurateurs, farmers, retailers, health organizations, and local communities participate in the program by registering their activities with tastings, workshops, and meetings around taste! In France the program is divided into two categories: Leçon de Goût (a lesson in taste) and Activité du Goût (A tasting activity). A Leçon de Goût involves a professional holding a class to teach students about taste. An Activité du Goût is a workshop held in the form of a degustation, discovery or a demonstration conducted by a cooking professional in a public or private space.

For what we’ve been informed is the first time, Australia is jumping aboard the Semaine du Goût train with The City of Unley hosting 2 events under its banner.

Cooking demonstration

The first, on Thursday 20 October, is a 3 course French cooking demo with Chef Jean-Francois Gavanon (you may have seen him in Panache French Theatre’s plays, or purchased wines from his Cyrano Wines) and the wonderful DJ Bennymax as MC. This cooking demo will be held at Unley Town Hall. Tickets cost $22.19 including booking fee and include attendance at the demonstration as well as a snack box. You can BYO beverages. Purchase your ticket here.

Concert and wine

The other event is Melange à Trois (read our interview with Sunitra from the group here) playing live at Ginger’s on Goodwood Road on Saturday 22 October. Ginger’s has put together a special Semaine du goût French menu for the occasion. Tickets to this concert include a glass of wine on arrival cost $20 inclusive of booking fee. Food purchases are additional. Purchase your concert tickets here.

While it’s not a large program, it is a promising start to Australia’s foray into the Semaine du Goût, which appears otherwise only to be celebrated in France and Japan.
