Sarah Zaglia

Sarah Zaglia, you’re performing in three shows at the Adelaide Fringe 2025 festival: Pop Culture Cabaret, Cirque du Cosplay and Tarot: Arcana. Tell us a little about these three shows.

All three shows have a circus and burlesque theme. Pop Culture Cabaret is a show that brings together all your favourite film characters! Cirque du Cosplay is a collaboration between AVCON (Anime and Video Game Convention) and Starling (burlesque performer): if you love video games or you’re a nerd/geek, you’ll love it! Tarot: Arcana is a more sensual show inspired by the Tarot cards. These are three quite different shows. Each show will have two performances.

You’re French and have been in Australia for 9 years. Why did you decide to come to Australia originally?

My husband and I moved here because we wanted to get away from life in Paris and we had family here.

You’re an aerial artist who specialises in aerial hoop. How did you get into aerial circus? What made you decide to make it your profession?

After years of dance, I started studying aerial hoop and aerial silks here in Adelaide five years ago at The Pole Boutique studio, where I’ve been teaching for three years. The circus world is fascinating and full of talented and incredibly generous people.

Do you come from an entertainment background?

No, not at all.

Tell us about your aerial act and what audiences can expect in each of the Fringe shows you perform in. Do you play a/Disguise yourself as a character in these shows at the Adelaide Fringe Festival?

All three of my performances will be in aerial hoop but with different energies. I’m playing Kill Bill in Pop Culture Cabaret, so a determined character and energising music. [in Cirque du Cosplay] I play Jinx, a character from the League of Legend video game who is cheeky and sassy. For Tarot, I play Temperance, a character who symbolises calm and balance. Three very different characters !

When you’re not performing, you teach aerial hoop at Pole Boutique. What do you like about teaching?

I’m a teacher by profession, so being an aerial discipline instructor was the next logical step in my career. It’s a pleasure to see our students progress! Aerial disciplines are for everyone, whatever your physique or fitness level. You don’t need to have done gymnastics, be flexible or be strong, we teach you all that in our studio. Our instructors are all extremely qualified and talented.

You’re not just a pole teacher, you’re also a French teacher at the Alliance Française. Were you a French teacher in France before coming to Australia?

No, I started my teaching career here at AF seven years ago.

What was your background in France?

I was part of a dance troupe in France during my language studies at the Sorbonne.

Why should people come and see Pop Culture Cabaret, Cirque du Cosplay and Tarot: Arcana at the Adelaide Fringe Festival?

The casting in these three productions is incredible, we have artists who have won numerous national and international awards, as well as performers from other states. You’ll find burlesque, aerial hoop, trapeze, balancing acts, fire-eaters and more!

We thank Sarah Zaglia for this interview and look forward to seeing her perform at Adelaide Fringe 2025. You will find everything you need to know for the 3 shows Sarah Zaglia is performing below.
