The Fête de la musique 2020 is on today, as it is every year on 21 June (the date stays the same because it is the Summer solstice (for those in the Northern Hemisphere). But even if the date is the same, the Fête de la musique will not be like previous festivals. Musicians will not fill streets across France but all is not lost. In Australia, we are lucky to be able to listen and watch events from the Fête de la musique in France thanks to social media and streaming. Largely, the Fête de la musique 2020 will be online.
Jean-Michel Jarre ” Seuls ensemble” (alone together): a virtual reality concert
Jean-Michel Jarre will broadcast a musical performance from his studio for the Fête de la musique 2020. He can also be simultaneously present in the form of an avatar on VRrOOm in front of an audience of avatars from across the world.
The concert will be streamed in real time from Jarre’s studio thanks to cameras installed on VRChat which will capture the performance and transmit it to the YouTube channels of the French Ministère de la Culture and Jean-Michel Jarre himself. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9UCsgzh5QxFWJTwsvlIfxQ.
This concert starts at 9:30pm French time so if you wake up early Monday morning, you may still be able to watch it.
Hall de la chanson
According to the official Fête de la musique website in France, there will be a Bal ménager de Boris Vian on Facebook and YouTube. There, you will be connected to the Hall de la chanson and you can dance and sing along. The only problem is that for us in Australia it’s going to be quite late as it kicks off at 6pm French time which is 3:30am AEST and 1:30am Perth time.

Mélo
The Fête de la Musique is celebrated all around the world. The Institut Français is organising a digital edition with French artists from around the world. More than 50 events and a 100 or so artists will be there for your discovery on the interactive platform Mélo (https://www.melo-app.com/).

What the France is bringing you a day of live concerts that you can watch at home.
From 4pm to 1:30am French time, there will be back to back half-hour concerts. So with the time difference you may be able to listen to the early and late concerts and sleep in between!

Adelaide: UNESCO City of Music
Adelaide, which was designated as the first and only City of Music in Australia, is now a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. For the Fête de la Musique, Adelaide will collaborate with other UNESCO Cities of Music from across the globe for a worldwide online event. For this, Adelaide has curated a program from 5 South Australian artists. You can watch their contributions here:

Alliance Française de Canberra
Benjamin Piat, a French singer, will perform an exclusive concert for the Alliance Française de Canberra live from France! He will sing songs from his world tour called « FrenchyParty » and will answer your questions after the performance.
