We’re not satisfied with just a single Champagne Day so we’re calling it Champagne Week and are starting with some champagne quotes.
World Champagne Day is officially this Friday 23 October 2020 according to the Comité Champagne but given there are many other dates floating around the web and because we think champagne deserves more than just one day, we are dedicating this week to champagne.
In today’s article, we share with you some quotes about champagne. On Wednesday we will give you champagne facts that you may not already know and finally on Friday we will tell you which champagnes French wine and champagne importers in Australia suggest you drink to celebrate World Champagne Day.
CHAMPAGNE QUOTES
As we celebrate champagne day 2020 all week long, here are some famous champagne quotes relating to champagne.
Dom Pérignon of the champagne house of the same name: “Come quickly, I am drinking the stars!” is said to have been Pérignon’s reaction when he tasted the bubbly wine for the first time. He had actually been commissioned to try to solve the problem of bubbles in still wine but realised they were actually a very good thing.
Lilly Bollinger of the famed champagne house had quite a quick wit: “I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it—unless I’m thirsty.”
Similarly Coco Chanel: “I only drink Champagne on two occasions, when I am in love and when I am not.”
Napoléon: “I cannot live without champagne. In victory, you deserve Champagne; in defeat, you need it.”
Sir Winston Churchill who was very fond of his champagne and even had to get the British government pay some of his champagne bills: “Remember gentleman, it’s not just France we’re fighting for, it’s Champagne!”
Brigitte Bardot: “Champagne is the one thing that gives me zest when I’m tired”
Isadora Duncan, American dancer: “Before I was born my mother was in great agony of spirit and in a tragic situation. She could take no food except iced oysters and champagne. If people ask me when I began to dance, I reply, in my mother’s womb, probably as a result of the oysters and champagne, the food of Aphrodite”
John Maynard Keynes, British economist: “my only regret is that I have not drunk more champagne in my life”.
Alfred Gratien of the champagne house of the same name: “Champagne must be to wine what couture is to fashion”
Hester Browne, British author “Always keep a bottle of Champagne in the fridge for special occasions. Sometimes, the special occasion is that you’ve got a bottle of Champagne in the fridge.”
Gilles Paris in his book “Au pays de kangourous“: A 10 year anniversary without champagne is like a trampoline without springs.
Stendhal in Le rouge et le noir: “After moral poisoning, one requires physical remedies and a bottle of champagne.”
Gilles Martin-Chauffier in Une vraie Parisienne: “Truth is a champagne bubble, it always comes up to the surface”
Amélie Nothomb in Le Fait du prince: “There is a moment, between the 15th and 16th mouthful of champagne where every man is an aristrocrat”.
